Many businesses are looking to run their offices / premises more efficiently, using less energy and in turn saving money and improving their green credentials. As offices introduce recycling schemes and paperless offices, many overlook how and where their energy is being used, and as a consequence, miss out on some great energy savings.
Below are four great tips for any business that wants to improve the energy efficiency of their office, not matter how large or small it may be.
Appliance Usage
The majority of an office's energy is used through the heating and cooling systems, and the appliances being used.
As we've heard for many years, turning appliances off instead of leaving them on standby can dramatically reduce energy consumption, as can using appliances in a more efficient manner.
By making sure that computers are switched off at night instead of being ‘put to sleep', or turning off the plug to the canteen dishwasher can help reduce the amount of energy being used, as can using natural light sources instead of lights.
EPCs
EPCs -- or energy performance certificates as they are properly known -- will become a legal requirement for all commercial premises in the UK being sold, built or rented. As well as being a legal requirement, they also come with a detailed report on the energy efficiency of your office building, taking factors such as its construction, use and relative position to the sun. Using the information gathered in this report, you will understand where your business can save on energy usage, enabling you to make smarter decisions.
Smart Meters
Smart meters are readily available from most energy suppliers and show you how much energy you are using, highlighting peak energy usage periods. In addition to this, they also transmit your energy readings direct to your supplier, signalling the end of estimated bills.
Compare Energy Prices
If you have implemented all of these ideas, and would still like to make savings on your energy bills, you may want to consider switching energy providers. Some energy providers offer 10% off your renewal quote from your current supplier if you switch to them, whilst some will offer fixed term prices and contracts for their customers.
